Meeting Minutes
The Meeting – was held at the Mayfield Twp. Hall
Networking/Decorating -5:00 PM, Sign in and Set Up
Welcome/Potluck - 6:00 PM Mark Hanner, Past President was filling in for Glen Pace. Everyone enjoyed the lovely Christmas potluck and ham dinner.
Business Meeting – Mark Hanner, called the meeting back to order at 6:45 PM. He thanked all those that opened their gardens for the summer tours, Cathy Clark, Ken & Marlene Daniels, Barb Hunter, Joanne Gensel, Jillian Gensel, Patrick & Patricia Major for hosting. The board of EMHS for everything they do, Becky Hanner, VP for mailings and buying supplies, Mark Hanner, Past President, Marlene Daniels for taking minutes and printing, typing them and now also treasurer, Cathy Hodgson and Gene Arms for their years of organizing the annual Plant Sale, and most of all Glen Pace for taking on the job of President and doing a wonderful job. Finally, to all the members for supporting EMHS throughout the years of our existence. And especially those of you that come early to help with setup and/or stay after to help with clean up.
Treasurer’s Reports – Marlene Daniels, treasurer We had three months of reports, September 2024 Starting balance $XX.xx, additions $XX.xx, no subtractions, Ending balance of $XX.xx. October 2024 starting balance of $XX.xx, no additions, subtraction of $XX.xx Ending balance of $XX.xx. November 2024, starting balance of $XX.xx, there were no additions or subtractions, leaving an ending balance of $XX.xxfor November 2024. Becky Hanner made a motion to accept the treasurer reports, Sandy Vukonich, seconded it, membership voted and approved the treasurers report for the last three months.
Meeting Minutes – Mark Hanner ask if there were any additions or corrections to the meeting minutes, there were none. Gene Arms made a motion to accept the minutes, Cathy Hodgson seconded it, the membership voted and approved the minutes.
Summer Member Garden Tour Meetings – We need volunteers to host the July and August tours. Please let one of the board members know if you are willing to host a tour.
Hosta College – there will be no meeting in March, Hosta College is March 21 –22 in Piqua, OH
Election of Officers – Vice President and secretary/treasurer election is held on odd years. Do we have anyone interested in volunteering for either of these two positions.
Name Badges – if you need a new name badge, please print your name on the sheet and a new one will be made. Please note replacements are $2.00.
Announcements – there were no announcements.

Meeting Minutes
The Meeting – was held at Suncrest Pavilion in Lapeer. This was our annual plant exchange.
Networking/Potluck -4:00 pm, set up for potluck. Sign in, stroll through the gardens and look over plants brought for the exchange. Everyone enjoyed a wonderful meal.
Business Meeting – started at 5:00 pm. President Glen Pace welcomed everyone.
Treasurers Report – June 2024 starting balance was $XX.xx, income $XX.xx, expenses were $XX.xx, leaving an ending balance of $XX.xx. July 2024 starting balance was $XX.xx, no income, expenses were $XX.xx, leaving an ending balance of $XX.xx. August 2024 starting balance of $XX.xx, income $XX.xx, expenses $XX.xx leaving an ending balance of $XX.xx. Robin Bratton made a motion to accept the treasurers report, Steve Balabon seconded, membership voted to accept the treasurers report.
Meeting Minutes – President asked if there were any changes to be made, there were none. Cathy Hodgson made a motion to accept the meeting minutes, Steve Balabon seconded, membership voted to accept the meeting minutes from June 2024.
The EMHS 2024 Calendar of events – November 14th, board meeting anyone that would like to attend is more than welcome. December 12th is our annual Christmas Party at Mayfield Twp. Hall.
EMHS 2025 tenative Calendar of events to date – February 13th held at Mayfield Twp. Hall have a question, answer time, or find a speaker? Either one sounded good to the membership. March no meeting, Hosta College, April 10th Bob Iiames speaker, by Zoom at Mayfield Twp. Hall. Mark Hanner will be checking out what we need to have for a Zoom. Otherwise will have to check on his speaker fee and other expenses, May 8th, Mayfield Twp. Hall, Esther Benedict speaking on trough crevice gardening.
June 12th, July 10th, and August 14th are all garden tours. September 11th, Plant exchange at Suncrest Pavilion. October 9th possible meeting at Mayfield Twp. Hall, December 11th Christmas Party at Mayfield Twp. Hall.
Dues – The board decided at our November 2023 meeting that the dues will be increased to $10.00 per year per household. Please check the directory to make sure you are paid for 2024 before the plant exchange.

EMHS 25th anniversary pins and keychains – Are there any paid memberships that have not received their free pin/keychain? Please see Glen to get yours.
Spring Plant sale/exchange – Dave Klaffer said the owner of Past Tense would be willing to have it there. He would like to have a sale versus an exchange. Membership was asked if they would be willing to bring plants in for us to sale with all proceeds going to EMHS. After some discussion the membership voted not to have a sale or an exchange.
Announcements – President Glen Pace had a hosta stone available from 2014. If anyone would like one, please sign up and pay. The cost is $40.00 for a painted one and $30.00 for natural. Also, October 6th is the 45th anniversary for Paul and Bonnie Laidler. Paul gave all the details, also wanted to let the membership know that Bonnie had a fall and is in rehab right now.
Next Meeting – December 12th annual Christmas Party at Mayfield Twp. Hall.

EMHS 06/13/24 Minutes
The Meeting – was held at the home and gardens of Cathy Clark. Tour Gardens at 4:00 pm
Potluck – 5:00 pm the meeting was called to order by President Glen Pace, and members enjoyed a wonderful potluck.
Approval of minutes – there were no changes to the May meeting minutes. A motion to accept the minutes was made by Teresa Dillon and seconded by Bonnie Vander-Muellen. The membership voted to accept the May 2024 minutes.
Treasurer’s Report – May 2024 Starting balance was $XXX.xx, additions of $XX.xx, subtractions of $XX.xx leaving an ending balance of $XXX..xx. A motion to accept the treasurer’s report was made by Sandy V., seconded by Pat Major. The membership voted to accept the treasurer's report.
EMHS Plant Sale 2024 – 182 plants were ordered. 47 given as member gift plants. 1 discounted to $5.00. 3 no growth total loss, 13 sold at cost including shipping cost. Total income was $XXX.xx, total billing $XXX.xx, leaving the club a profit of $XXX.xx.
EMHS 2024 Calendar of events – July 11th – tour Ken & Marlene Daniels and Barb Hunter, both in Lapeer.
August 8th– tour at J. Gensel’s in Flint and the Majors in Goodrich.
September12th – EMHS plant exchange at Suncrest Gardens.

Announcements – Carolyn Pickard asked about the spring plant exchange. Glen said it was discussed and there was no place to hold it. Dave Klaffer said he would investigate the Past Tense Cider Mill to see if they would allow it there. Carolyn Pickard will be in charge of this whether it is to be a go or not.

The Meeting – was held at the Mayfield Twp. Hall
Networking – 5:00 pm Doors open, set up refreshments, sign in and pay dues and pick up plants that were ordered.
Potluck – Glen Pace called the meeting to order. Everyone enjoyed the potluck.
Program – Mark Hanner, Less Is More (rethinking the garden experience)
Business Meeting – 6:37 pm called to order Break 6:50 – 7:00
Treasurer’s Report – Marlene Daniels, treasurer/secretary gave the report for April. Starting balance, $XXX.xx, additions $XX.xx, Subtractions $XX.xx, leaving an ending balance of $XXX.xx. Robin Bratton made a motion to approve the treasurer's report, Sandy Vukonich seconded it, the motion was approved by the membership.
Meeting Minutes – There were no changes to be made to the April minutes. Steve Balabon made a motion to approve the minutes and Robin Bratton seconded it, the motion was approved by the membership.
Dues – The Board decided at our November Board meeting that the dues will be increased to $10.00 per year per household. The club started back in 1995 with dues set at $5.00 a year and it has never increased. Please pay your dues if you are listed as 2023 on the directory which was updated April 11, 2024.
EMHS plant sale 2024
The price for each selection is $10.00. All selections will be offered tonight. All plants delivered tonight must be picked up tonight. Hosta Dancing with Dragons was our membership gift plant, one per paid household. All extras will be sold for $3.00 each. As of this meeting, we have 52 paid (2024) memberships. If not paid at this time, no free plant.

EMHS 04/11/24 Minutes
The Meeting – was held at the Mayfield Twp. Hall
Networking – 5:00 pm Doors open, set up refreshments, sign in and pay dues.
Potluck – 6:00 pm Glen called the meeting to order. Everyone enjoyed the potluck.
Program – Glen Pace, Hellebores; The species, some hybrids and which ones grow best in zones 5b – 6a. Thank you Glen Pace for a wonderful presentation.
Business Meeting – Glen announced that he added a EMHS public media section, it includes pictures but please if you submit pictures make sure there are no people in them. Also reminded the membership that all newsletters and minutes are posted on the website.
Last month we forgot to get approval of the minutes for December 2023, so we did both December and February’s minutes. There were no changes to be made to the minutes. Steve Balabon made a motion to accept the minutes and Becky Hanner seconded, the motion passed unanimously.
Reminder that the board decided at our November meeting that the dues will be increased to $10.00 per year per household.
Treasurer’s Report – February 2024 starting balance was $XX.xxincome of $XX.xx and expenses were $XX.xx leaving February with an ending balance of $XX.xx. March 2024 starting balance was $XX.xx, income of $XX.xx, there were no expenses, leaving March with an ending balance of $XX.xx. The motion was made by Becky Hanner and seconded by Cathy Hodgson; the motion was passed unanimously.
EMHS Plant sale – price for each selection is $10.00. All extras will be offered at the May meeting. All plants must be prepaid this year, and all plants will be delivered at the May meeting. If you can’t pick up your order, please find someone else to get it for you.
Hosta College – was March 15 -16 2024. There were 248 attendees, 45 classes offered, with more than 20 instructors. Feedback on the event was those that attended had a great time.

Announcements – Melva Bond’s sister passed away. Becky would also like you to contact her if any member knows of another member that is ill, and she will send a card out to them.
Next Meeting – May 9th, 2024, at the Mayfield Twp. Hall in Lapeer. Topic is Less is More by Mark Hanner. Also don’t forget it will also be time to pick up the plants that were ordered and the free plant provided by the club.

Meeting Minutes
The Meeting – was held at the Mayfield Twp. Hall
Networking – 5:00 pm doors opened, set up refreshments, sign in and pay dues.
Potluck – Glen called the meeting to order at 6:00pm Everyone enjoyed the potluck.
Business Meeting – Before the meeting Marlene had a game of name the hosta and prizes were handed out to the winners. Glen ask the membership if everyone had had a chance to look at the new EMHS website, there were still a few people that had not. Glen let the people know that he and Marlene would be available if they needed any help. Glen gave an update on Mark Hanner’s recent injury; Cathy Hodgson also gave an update on Mick Hodgson. Glen went over the information on the plant sale and thanked Pat Maitland for stepping in for Cathy Hodgson.
Treasurer’s Report – December starting balance was $XXXX.xx, there was no income, and the expenditures were $XXX.xx, leaving an ending balance of $XXXX.xx January starting balance was $XXXX.xx there was no income and not expenditures leaving us with an ending balance of $XXXX.xx. The motion to accept the treasurer’s report was made by Rob Trott and seconded by Cathy Hodgson. The membership voted unanimously to approve the report.
EMHS 2024 Calendar of Events – Glen went over the calendar and thanked Cathy Clark for volunteering her gardens for the June 13th tour. He also stated that we still need another site volunteer for August. Marlene Daniels suggested Pat & Pat Major’s home. Glen will follow up.

EMHS 12/07/23 Minutes

December 7th, 2023
Meeting Minutes
The meeting – was held at the Mayfield Twp. Hall
Networking/Decorating – 5:00 PM, decorate for Christmas Party, set up refreshments, and sign in.
Club Surprise – 6:00 PM, Eric announced that we now have a website. From now on all our correspondence will be through this website Emhosta.com. Eric went through all the technical aspects of it and showed people how to set it up on their phones. He also said he would be available if anyone needed any assistance in getting this set up on their computers or phones if they are struggling.
Potluck –6:30 PM, Everyone enjoyed the lovely Christmas potluck and ham dinner.
Business Meeting – the meeting was called to order at 7:20 PM by President Glen Pace. Glen thanked Rick &Nancy Stout, Piechnik’s Garden Gate, Jim Pabst, Paul Laidler, Carolyn Koning, Carrie & Kelly Williams, and Tina Metzger for hosting this year’s Garden Tours.
Also, many thanks to Barb Hunter for her many years of service as our Treasurer.
Ken & Jan Zawisa as kitchen workers for our indoor meetings. Making sure we have coffee and hot water for tea, making sure we have all the appropriate items to carry on all our wonderful potlucks.
The Board for everything they do:
Becky – Vice President, mailings and buying supplies.
Mark – Former President, our go to guy for guidance.
Marlene – Secretary, for meeting minutes and making sure snail mail receives the newsletter. And now taking on the position of Treasurer too.
Cathy & Mick Hodgson and Gene Arms for doing our plant sales for the last number of years. Also, on a sad note this will be our last year for plant sales unless changes arise as our profits from 2023 were minimal and not worth the work that it takes to pull this off.
Thanks to all the members for supporting EMHS throughout the years of our existence. Especially for those that come early to help with set-up and or stay after the meeting to help with cleaning up, it is very much appreciated.
Lastly the membership thanked Glen Pace for all his hard work in keeping this club afloat.

Hosta, Terms of Endearment 20 available, Hosta, Time in a Bottle 20 available. The following Hellebore’s will be for sale: Hellebore, Flower Girl 20 available, Hellebore, Spanish Flare 20 available. And one Epimedium, Pretty in Pink 30 is available. The price for each selection is $10.00. All orders MUST BE prepaid this year, all plants will be delivered at the May meeting. If you cannot be at the meeting to pick up your plant, you MUST find someone to pick it up for you at the meeting.

Old Business:
Officer’s Job Duties as approved by the EMHS Board at the October 18, 2010, board meeting:
Change made to Fund Raising Coordinator in 2017 due to end of Hosta Stone Project
President – Coordinates meetings, presides over meetings, obtains, and secures speakers for meetings, confirms hall reservations for meetings, writes and emails newsletters and any other notifications, call board meetings as needed, oversees the EMHS blog site and publishes all minutes and newsletters on blog, conducts door prize and raffle drawings as dictated.
Vice President – Assumes the duties of the President when the President is absent. Co-signatory on EMHS checking account, helps set-up hall for meetings, sends thank you notes to speakers or hosts for current meeting.
Treasurer – Keeps the EMHS checking account up to date and balances account on a monthly basis, keeps receipt book up to date and purchases new receipt books as needed, writes and mails check as needed for EMHS business, keeps records of monies received and paid out for special events, has an up-to-date treasurer’s report ready for each regularly scheduled meeting, has all financial records ready for an annual audit that the Past President will over-see.
Secretary – Keeps EMHS Membership list up to date on a monthly basis, takes minute notes at the monthly meetings and writes the meeting minutes for each meeting (these will be emailed to the President to publish on the blog), mails newsletters by USPS as dictated by membership list, alerts members via email/USPS as to their dues status when applicable, secures the Mayfield Twp. Hall for meetings, sells raffle tickets at the meetings and assists with drawings.
(Italicized/Bold part to be done by Fund Raising or volunteer)Fund Raising Coordinator – Brainstorms for ways EMHS can increase revenue and helps to initiate those ideas into reality. Oversees fund raising projects.
Past President – The “go-to” person for the rest of the EMHS officers, assists other officers with answers to problems that arise in their duties, oversees an annual audit of the EMHS financial records and checking account.
Do we need to make any changes in the officer’s duties?
Decisions – Have fundraising coordinators sell raffle tickets at the meetings and assist with drawings.
Combine Secretary and Treasurer jobs until someone in the Membership volunteers to become Treasurer. (this is ok per our by-laws)

Membership Directory – Latest directory updated on l0/14/23 Also need to update the business cards. The financial report sheets have all been updated, as well as the membership applications. Glen announced a new website for the club, it is EMHosta.com and at this point it will cost $XX per year. Eric Hahn will attend the December meeting to explain to the membership how to download the website and make an icon for easy access.Vice President – Becky Hanner
Becky said there were no issues with mailing thank you notes. Becky does need a book of stamps for the mailings. She also suggested buying cards, thinking of you/get well cards to send to members as needed. The board voted to have her proceed with the purchasing of such cards.Past President – Mark Hanner
Glen asks if there were still keychains/pins available and if we knew if the new members were being offered the opportunity to get one? Mark suggested that Glen have some on hand also in case Mark was not at a meeting where a new member needed one.Secretary/Treasurer – Marlene Daniels
Glen asks Marlene how the paid memberships vs. directory listings were? Also, if she needed any stamps, ink, or paper.
Marlene reported that she would like updates from the Membership on their emails and phone numbers, and that she was fine for the time being on supplies.
The treasury total as of today was $XXX.xx, and there was no unusual cost in 2023. Glen would like the yearend totals ASAP after 12/31/2023, Marlene agreed to complete it.Audit of Books – Mark will oversee per by-laws and Glen will ask Deb Brown, and Pat Maitland to assist. The IRS filing will be done when Marlene finalizes the end of year.

Cathy Hodgson said the annual plant sale was on for 2024.

Future Plant exchanges will still be held at the Suncrest Pavilion, pending it is available. Making sure everyone takes home whatever extra plants that belonged to them has helped with the clean up after. Make sure the $5.00 table is situated so only the fund-raising committee is allowed to sit and can oversee what people get a $5.00 plant. Sign-up sheets will be out at the Christmas Party, and other meetings until filled. The board voted to continue with no food at gardens and should have at least two gardens.Annual Plant Sale 2024
Plants have already been ordered from Walters Gardens. The board discussed whether or not to continue the plant sale, after discussing the board voted to stop the plant sale. 2024 will be the last time we will be offering it. We changed the delivery of the plants to May, and we will be distributing the plants at the May 9th meeting. The club will put on the order form that all plants ordered must be picked up at the May 9th meeting, if you are not able to attend, please make sure you have someone pick up your order or your will be put out for sale at the meeting and your money will be refunded. The club will no longer be keeping plants after the date of delivery.Adjournment: The meeting adjourned at 1:43 PM
