May 2024 Newsletter
Note from the President- The Spring Ephemerals are blooming and the Hosta are breaking dormancy and sending their leaf spikes up. Typical of our Michigan spring we are encountering night temperatures below freezing and there is a risk of new growth being frostbitten. As gardeners we have to make the decision of whether or not we are going to try to protect all of our plants, certain choice plants, or let Mother Nature take over. Having expansive gardens makes it impossible to try to protect everything, so I am leaving things as they are and just hoping for the best outcome possible.
The EMHS Annual Plant Sale orders will be delivered at the May 9th meeting. If you turned in an order, please be at the meeting to pick up your order or make arrangements for somebody else to pick up your order for you. We will not take responsibility for caring for plants that are paid for and not picked up. All extra plants will be available for open sale at the meeting. What we have left available for open sales as of me writing this newsletter is: Hosta Terms of Endearment-8, Hosta Time in a Bottle-4, Helleborus Flower Girl- 4, Helleborus Spanish Flare-6, Epimedium Pretty in Pink- 8. Every current paid membership (there are 52 as of the April 11th meeting) will receive one free plant of Hosta Dancing with Dragons. There have been an additional 10 of those plants sold at $3 each, leaving 10 available for open sale.
Mark Hanner will be doing our May presentation. I have no idea of where Mark is going with the Topic of Less is More so we will all have to attend the meeting to find out. Mark’s sense of humor is sure to entertain us.
I talked with Cathy Clark about the visit to her gardens on June 13th and she said that we can have a potluck in her pole barn as long as people bring their own chairs.
The Lapeer Master Gardeners will be holding their Workshop at the Suncrest Pavilion and Conference room on August 24, 2024. The cost for the Workshop is $55/per person. They plan to have a vending area this year as well as their educational presentations. The Vending area will be open to the public. I will post more information on this as it comes available.
We hope to see you at our May 9th, 2024 meeting. Be prepared to pick up your Plant Sale order. Also be prepared to pay your annual dues to Marlene. There is an updated Directory at the sign-in desk at every meeting. Please check your membership date listed to see if you need to pay dues. Dues this year have been raised to $10/yr/household per the EMHS Board Meeting held in November 2023.
Sincerely,
Glen Pace
EMHS President
