June 2024 Newsletter
Note from the President- Spring came to visit in March/April, then 2 nights of 24 degrees froze many Hosta that had already emerged and killed them back. Magnolia blooms were killed and leaves of many other trees i.e. Ginkgo and Japanese Maples that had already budded were killed so that we have to hope that there are secondary buds that weren’t killed and the trees would eventually develop leaves. Warmer spring temps returned, then we had 91 degrees to make the plants languish in the heat. Thank goodness we have gotten consistent rains, but with some of those rains the hail damaged plants. Now tonight (as of the time I am composing this newsletter), the temps are supposed to be in the low 40’s for me and in the high 30’s for Lapeer area. We all know what has happened and continues to happen and can only hope for the best outcome for our gardens.
Thank you, Mark Hanner, for the wonderful presentation at the May 9th meeting. Your pictures were wonderful and the information shared was helpful to everybody who attended.
We finally received the final billing today from Walter’s Gardens for the shipping of the plants for the 2024 EMHS Plant Sale. I have completed the accounting of the Plant Sale and will announce the outcome at the June 13th meeting. I want to thank everybody that purchased plants for their continued support of EMHS.
Our next meeting is at Cathy Clark’s in Imlay City and we will be having a potluck in her pole barn. Please be sure to bring your own chair and your favorite dish to pass for the potluck.
Since we cannot post everybody’s personal information on the website, if you need a printed copy of the Membership Directory, you can email Glen and for the cost of $2.00 he will bring you a printed copy of the directory to the next meeting. If you keep your EMHS emails, the directory file was sent out to every member in October 2023.
The Lapeer Master Gardeners will be holding their Workshop at the Suncrest Pavilion and Conference room on August 24, 2024. The cost for the Workshop is $55/per person. On the EMHS Website you can go to the Public Events tab to see the flier for the event. They plan to have a vending area this year as well as their educational presentations. The Vending area will be open to the public.
Sincerely,
Glen Pace
EMHS President
